Overview

Today children will take a walking tour of the magnificent Great Wall of China and learn why it rightfully finds its place amongst the 7 Ancient Wonders of the World.

With some sections dating back two thousand years, the imposing wall is actually a series of walls that were built across the northern borders of Imperial China as a form of defence against various nomadic groups from the Eurasian Steppe. Besides protecting the nation, other purposes of the wall included border controls, allowing the imposition of duties on goods transported along the Silk Road and regulation of trade.

Some of the walls were built as early as the 7th century BC, with selective stretches later joined together by Qin Shi Huang (220–206 BC), the first emperor of China. Little of the Qin wall remains today. Later on, many successive dynasties have built and maintained multiple stretches of border walls, including the Ming dynasty.

While the Great Wall can be visited in 15 Chinese provinces and autonomous regions, the best place to visit it is in Beijing.

As children take a walk along a section of the wall with our subject matter expert and guide, they will get an insight into its inspiring history.
