Overview

Do you enjoy watching martial art stunts in movies? Or have you always wanted to learn some form of self-defense? Well this is as good as it gets! Here’s your chance to learn a little something about the ancient Chinese martial art form of Shaolin Kung Fu and even try a few basic moves. All the way from China, a master of Kung Fu will guide you through this exciting live-streamed session. If you’re keen on trying your hand at learning, make sure you wear comfortable exercise clothing for this session.

This fascinating session starts with an introduction about the history of Shaolin Kung Fu, also called Shaolin Wushu, or Shaolin quan - one of the oldest, largest, and most famous styles of Kung FuThe origin of the Shaolin Temple and Shaolin Kung Fu find their way back as early as the 5th and 6th centuries in the Henan province of China, when Buddhist monks of the time sought some form of self-defense as they guarded their expansive monasteries and the riches within. Although there are many other versions of Kung Fu that developed thereafter, Shaolin Kung Fu is said to be the first institutionalised form of the martial art.

Right before the demo, our host gives you an introduction about Kung Fu, its origin and a bit of its history, followed by a visit to a Shaolin Kung Fu training centre. You will then be met by our friendly Kung Fu master, trained at the temple, as our host leaves you in his expert hands for the rest of this invigorating session.

Students will be able to view the various moves and tools used by the experts, and are bound to be fascinated by how the elegant and innocuous traditional fan turns into a lethal weapon of combat in Shaolin Kung Fu. They will also witness the incredible energy in the many steps the master demonstrates.

In the last part of the session, students will be able to learn basic Kung Fu moves from the master. He will first take you through a quick warm-up regimen to get all your muscles activated and then will demonstrate and guide you to perform a few of the basic stances and moves of Shaolin Kung Fu. If the captivating session leaves you more than interested, you could even find out if the master might be able to conduct online classes for you and a bunch of friends.

Like our other sessions, this is an interactive hour where students can ask questions of the master about the artform, and in the process, practise their Mandarin speaking skills.
